PlayWorlds Educational Platform
As lifelong game makers, we have spent our careers perfecting the art of fun. Along the way we have made an important discovery, that if kids focus on the pure joy of making things, learning is a byproduct. Being the creators of The Incredible Machine and Contraption Maker, we have "accidentally" made some of the most educational tools of all time. Now, we are using that experience to build a non-profit legacy that puts similar tools onto every child's personal device, for free.
The Spark of Creation
When a child opens PlayWorlds for the first time, they aren’t just entering a game, they’re playing with the World Maker, a high-end, kid-oriented environment that lets them build interactive worlds, games, and experiences. They start by dragging simple physical items like blocks, gears, pulleys, ropes and motors into the Build Area. When they switch the physics on, the world comes alive. They aren't just placing stickers, they are learning how torque, gravity, and momentum actually work because every part behaves exactly like its real world counterpart. But, even more important than the physics concepts, they are learning how to THINK.
Driven by the desire to make the thing they imagine, they will seek out the tools to help make it happen. Just like the kid that learns to read better in order to get the full Harry Potter story, kids will learn math or physics or engineering concepts to make their PlayWorlds puzzle or game or experience become a reality.
Spark: AI as a Creative Companion
Starting from a blank canvas with hundreds of parts, characters, and worlds to choose from can be daunting, so we have integrated AI from the ground up to get kids kick started. Spark is the child's creative Companion. It isn't there to do the work for them, but to act as a mentor that understands their intent.
As a World Architect, Spark can instantly scaffold a scene from a simple description, like "Build me a park with a stream and a circle of trampolines with several Mel characters bouncing on them." It also acts as a natural language "wrench" (the Part Assistant), allowing a child to tweak the physical properties of a part simply by talking to it. Whether they are using the Part Maker to give their creations a unique look or writing advanced rules as a Modder, Spark ensures the focus stays on the joy of making rather than technical friction.
But building is only half the story. Spark also serves as a Navigator, a dedicated guide that ensures a child never feels lost in the vast universe of possibilities. The Navigator watches what they are building and suggests "Discovery Paths," which are curated journeys that show them how to master a new concept, like electrical, engineering or rocketry. It helps them find the perfect part from the library or suggests a new game based on their interests. The Navigator ensures that every moment of play is an opportunity to find something new.
Most importantly, we prioritize Construction over Solution. Spark can build the "gym," but the child still "lifts the weights" to build the actual machine. The AI empowers the creative process without ever bypassing the fun of solving the puzzle.
From Toys to Games
But the magic really starts when that child decides to turn their "toy" into an experience. Maybe they want their machine to be the heart of a zombie defense game, or a puzzle that challenges their friends. They use the Scenario Maker to set the rules. Instead of typing lines of code, they use Spark to define the Intent of their world. They can simply tell Spark to "Show a 'Happy Birthday' message when the ball goes into the hoop," or set complex win conditions through conversation. Spark handles the underlying logic, turning their creative vision into a working reality.
A Language of Interoperability
The true "superpower" of PlayWorlds is its hidden DNA. Every part, every character like Tim the Robot, and every world is built on a universal language. This means a basketball a child builds today isn't trapped in one machine. That same part can instantly travel into a 2D arcade game they are designing, or become a prop in a digital movie they are directing in our Story Maker. We call this Zero Waste Creation. Nothing a child builds is ever "finished." It’s an investment that lives on across a whole suite of creative apps.
An Open Architecture for Discovery
Because PlayWorlds is built entirely on web standards, it isn't a "walled garden." We have designed the platform to be an open architecture for discovery. Educators and content creators can use our tools to build curated learning worlds or physics-based videos that live anywhere on the web. A working contraption or a complex puzzle can be inserted directly into a WordPress site, a school's Learning Management System (LMS), or even a social media post.
This same open DNA allows PlayWorlds to act as a universal protocol for physical machines. Any AI in the world can learn to speak our language, bringing stable and realistic physics interactions to any platform that needs them. We are building the engine of truth that ensures AI-generated creativity is anchored in the real laws of physics.
A Sustainable Mission
While our heart is a non-profit, our engine is designed for long-term independence and growth. We sustain PlayWorlds through a combination of grants, donations, and a "play-it-forward" model of commerce.
We allow parents to invest in their child's creativity through our virtual currency, PBux. Parents manage the wallet, while kids see only the potential for their next creation. This allows the platform to be a self-sustaining ecosystem where the enthusiasm of our most active supporters helps provide free access for everyone else.
For example, when a child uses PBux to give a Part a unique artistic look, the value of that token covers the small underlying processing cost and creates a surplus for the mission. We take that surplus and put it right back into the platform, ensuring that a child from an affluent family in New York is effectively sponsoring the creative journey of a child in a village across the globe. By charging a few cents more for premium visual tweaks, we can provide thousands of hours of playground time to those who need it most.
Safety, and the Future
Because we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, our mission isn't profit, it's impact. We’ve designed PlayWorlds to be a safe, anonymous sanctuary. We use an anonymous system for login to protect child privacy and our "Small Social" features allow kids to collaborate and build together in private, parent-approved clubs.
Most importantly, because our engine runs entirely on the child's own device, it costs us nothing to let them play for thousands of hours. This allows us to provide a high-end, stable, and safe creative environment to children across the globe, regardless of their economic status.
PlayWorlds is the universe, the physics, and the Companion. The children provide the imagination.
